Andamio: A Simple and Functional Shelving System

A minimalist design inspired by traditional Indian scaffolding

The Andamio Shelf is a simple modular shelving system that has been inspired by traditional Indian scaffolding. The system is playing with the spirit of simplicity and functionality through the materials and compounds of the different parts. The Andamio Shelf consists of two basic levels that can dock to each other and be adjusted to various widths to suit storage needs. The materials are environmentally friendly and consist of wood and metal boards. The assembly itself can be completed without the use of any tools and, once disassembled, the design becomes completely flat-packed. Simplicity and functionality are its strength.

The Andamio Shelf is made using laser-cut recycled aluminum boards and solid wooden oak sticks. The wooden sticks can be interlocked into each other to create your personal design, adapting to the customer's needs. The design is available in two sizes: Andamio small, measuring 310 x 580 x H360 mm, and Andamio tall, measuring 310 x 580 x H900 mm. The flat-packed design and tool-free assembly make it easy to transport and set up in any space.

The project started in November 2011 in Barcelona and was finished in April 2015 in Milan. It was presented during the Fuorisalone in the ex.t showroom. The inspiration for the design came from a five-month stay in India in 2007/2008, where the designers researched traditional Indian scaffoldings. They used photos and samples from that time to analyze the structures and adapt their usage to a modern shelf.

The Andamio Shelf has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
